Short Essay on Summer Vacation in English

School closes down next week for the summer holidays. I am eagerly awaiting the day I go home from school knowing that I will not be expected to enter my classroom for two long months.

There are many things that I would like to do in my holidays. First of all I will visit all my friends turn by turn. They keep pestering me to visit them at home but school keeps me too busy, my friends and I will play the whole day long.

Cricket is my favourite sport and my friends have organized cricket matches during the holidays. I am looking forward to playing and bringing honours to my team.

My parents have planned a holiday for fifteen days. We plan to take the train that leaves. Delhi for Chandigarh. From there we propose to go to the hill station called Kasauli. It is a comparatively small hill station but it is extrernely charming indeed. There are some
Beautiful hotels there and my family loves to stay at one particular hotel run by an old British lady.

In Kasauli, I shall go for long walks with my sister in the morning and even in the evening. One often hears about ghosts in hill stations and I love the stories that are told by the local people. I shall talk to the people and probably unearth some unknown stories from the past.

Skating is a popular sport in Kasauli. I can skate very well now and I propose to spend a lot of time on the wheel of my skates. The fresh air of the hill station will rejuvenate us and we will comeback to the city feeling more relaxed and fresh.

On my arrival back home I propose to study. There is a lot to learn and the holidays will be a good time to sit at my desk and concentrate on my work. I will have the satisfaction of working and enjoying myself too.

I have many letters to write to my friends living aborad. I shall do that in my holidays My friends here and I can go on short one — day picnic every week and the rest the week shall go in lazing around, listening to music or watching some programmes on television.

Just the thought of the holidays is making me happy. I cannot wait for them any longer.

Planning a Holiday

If you’re planning a holiday, learn this essential vocabulary for types of holiday and holiday preparation.!

Planning a holiday

Many people take their main holiday in summer, and although some people choose a Last-minute break, others plan their holiday months in advance.

The beginning of the year is a good time for people to start looking at holiday Brochures. Tour operators (companies that organise holidays) as well as Travel agents (the people that sell holidays) give lots of information about holiday Destinations and types of holiday.

Types of holiday

As well as the traditional two-week Beach holiday, you can choose from a range of holidays: a Cruise (holiday on a ship), an Activity holiday (a holiday that involves walking, cycling, climbing or other sports), a City break (a weekend or a few days in a different city) and so on. A lot of people choose a Package holiday, where flights and accommodation are included in the price. But many people prefer an independent holiday, where they make their own Travel arrangements.

If you can’t travel abroad, you can also choose a Staycation — a mix of «vacation» (holiday) and «staying at home». This is where you still take a week or two for a break, but do fun activities in your own city, region or country.

If you travel independently, you will need to Book your flights or train tickets. Unless you have an Onward destination, you will probably book a Return journey. Then you will need to Make a reservation at a hotel, or another place to stay, such as a campsite (if you are camping in a tent), or a caravan site (if you are staying in a caravan), or a B&B (a bed and breakfast).

Holiday preparations

For all types of foreign holidays, it is essential that you check you have all your Travel documents. Make sure your Passport hasn’t expired, and that you have a Visa if necessary. If you are travelling to some countries, you also need to make sure that all your Vaccinations (protection against illness) are up to date. For some countries you might need a vaccination against hepatitis, or yellow fever, for example.

As your Departure date gets nearer, you can start to plan the details of your journey. Perhaps it will be a good idea to buy a Guide book, or a Phrase book, if you don’t speak much of the local language. Some people like to read up on (= get lots of background information) where they are going, and find out about the Places of interest and «must-see» Sights. It’s also fun to make a Packing list, so you don’t forget any vital clothes or toiletries.

It’s also a good idea to buy Local currency in advance, if your flight gets in (= arrives) in the middle of the night, when no banks are open. Most airlines also advise you to take out (=get) Travel insurance just in case your flight is delayed or cancelled, or if you get ill and need to be repatriated (sent back to your country).

Don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets and your house while you’re away. Put your dog into kennels (a dog hotel), and leave a key with your neighbour just in case! Hopefully your neighbour will Keep an eye on your house while you’re on holiday! Finally, get to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Nowadays it can take much longer to get through security and onto the plane. Have a nice trip and send your neighbour a Postcard!

My Plans for the Holidays

First, I would like to read all the latest best-sellers that have been released. Busy with my studies, here have been quite a number of new books that I have not read. Novels from Sidney Sheldon and Lawrence Block, two of my favorite authors, have been released recently. Then, there are also some issues of National Geographic and Readers’ Digest magazines that I have bought in recent months which I have not had the time to read.

Then, I would have to watch the numerous television programs that I have recorded on video cassettes. I have missed out many episodes of «E. R.» and «X-Files», not to mention the critically acclaimed «Desperate Housewives». Television programs are not the only ones that I have missed out. There have also been a few good movies which I have not yet watched. I would have to rent DVDS to watch those as well.

Finally, I plan to organize some fun activities with my classmates. I intend to go fishing by the stream and go trekking through the nearby woods with them. And if there is keen interest, we might even go camping for a week. We would, of course, have to bring the necessary camping items like tents, sleeping bags, insect repellents, cooking utensils and sufficient food.

I look forward in earnest to the activities I have planned for the holidays. I am sure that the coming holidays will be a time of cheery rest and cheerful recreation.
