As the semester comes to a close this assignment provides an excellent opportunity to look back on my experiences in this class. It has become quite evident to me that I have grown a substantial amount as a writer and as a person as a result of my participation in this class. I truly appreciate the growth that I have gone through in this class. It is difficult to put into words how much I have grown as a writer but I will make a valiant effort to do so throughout this reflection.

At the beginning of this semester I was extremely timid and shy because of the adjustment that I was going through as a person moving to college. My writing reflected this shyness and I felt like I did not truly let my personality shine through my writing. As the semester progressed I began to feel more and more comfortable as a writer and as a person. This class provided an excellent opportunity to interact with my peers and discuss things in class with a certain sense of maturity that I had never experienced in high school. By the time our inquiry #4 project rolled around I was comfortable enough with my professor as well as my peers to share things in my life that I have shared with only a small number of other people. This class has helped me gain a lot of maturity in a short time. Obviously, I have grown as a writer but the acquisition of this maturity in my life as a result of this class is something that is very important and something that I am extraordinarily grateful for.

As I have previously mentioned I got more and more comfortable as a writer as this semester went on. I was rather unfamiliar with writing higher-level personal narratives. In my first inquiry I wrote a paper that was supposed to have a focus on a personal narrative that was a significant experience in creating literacy for me. While I discussed a certain experience in my life I was rather vague and too broad with my story. I focused more on portraying facts to my audience rather than describing my story and that hurt the quality of my paper. By the time inquiry #4 rolled around I was a vastly different writer. My personal narrative by this point was well defined and I described it with a great deal of emotion. Although this was not a written essay I feel like my narrative was much more effective in connecting with viewers than my first narrative. The contrast in quality between work in my first and fourth inquiry is an excellent example of my growth as a scholar throughout this semester.

As a person it is important to stand for something and have views on controversial issues. Before this class I tended to avoid social and political conflict. I tried to remain as neutral as possible on all subjects in an effort to not anger anyone I was interacting with. However, after a few discussions in this class I quickly formed views on things and opinions that I felt rather strong about. A few examples that stick out in my mind are the activity that we did in class with the “Hide Your Kids” YouTube video. I, just like many others, love that video as well as the song. However, when you really look at it this video is racist and well as slanderous. The way the public portrays this man gives him a reputation that may not be accurate or fair. This made me really examine the media in our country and look at if people are portrayed fairly. Also, the recent article we read by Ann Coulter was something that really lit a fire in me. It pushed me to really look at things thoroughly and think about how I feel about them and this is a truly important quality to have. If a person has nothing to stand for what will they turn to? Luckily as a result of this class I have learned to form opinions on important issues in our society.

My experiences in this class have also helped me become a better student overall. This class played a huge role in me learning how to be a successful college student. In High School, teachers guided us through everything and we were seemingly never on our own to do anything. This class was very different than any high school English class I have ever been a part of. Getting a feel for having class only twice a week was something very unique that took some time for me to adjust to. Also, the structure of this class gave us a great deal of freedom on how we wanted to do things. I feel like learning how to succeed in a college environment is something that will be very important for my continued success as a college student. Qualities such as self-motivation and a truly dedicated work ethic are things that were enhanced as a result of me being a part of this class. These qualities will be extremely important for me in the future as I have a number of academic goals in mind that I would like to achieve before my college career is over.

Prior to my enrollment in this class I had never revised any paper that I had ever written. I ended up revising multiple drafts of my papers in this class. I feel like this is something very important that I have learned from this class. Learning to revise and diagnose errors with the help of my peers or my professor is something that will greatly help the quality of my writing. I felt like I was a strong writer coming into this class but now being able to adapt my writing to different styles and being able to make appropriate and effective revisions to my work I feel like I am a more complete English student. I was very stubborn to adjust my work before this class, however I now realize that adjustments are not only an important part of life but they are an extremely important part of learning and writing. No paper is ever perfect and constant tweaks and revisions must be constantly made to create a product that is enjoyable to read and high in quality. I am thankful that I realized this in ENG111.

Analysis of my papers as well as other writings and essays is something that I have learned from this class as well. Analysis of many things is very important in being a successful person. I have already mentioned my enhanced ability to analyze my own work as a result of this class, but I have also learned to more effectively analyze other people’s work. Peer revisions gave me an opportunity to look at other student’s work and provide analysis and constructive feedback. Also, looking at other products and analyzing their content is something I feel more comfortable doing. Our in class analysis of “The Tyger”, “A modest Proposal” and multiple YouTube videos, helped me form a thought process on how to analyze things and how to look at things on a deeper level. This thought process and ability to look at things thoroughly and effectively will be invaluable in my future collegiate endeavors.

I am genuinely appreciative for all the things that I have learned in this class. The benefits of this course are obviously plentiful in terms of academics but also in terms of life skills. Interacting with students and sharing your work is something that I was a bit uncomfortable with before this course. Now I am completely comfortable putting my emotions and feelings into class discussions and my writing. As a result I will be a better person, scholar, and writer.

I would like to thank you Stephanie for providing a great classroom environment, and teaching us so much during this semester. I really enjoyed learning in your class and I feel like it is a class that I will remember for the rest of my college career and beyond.

A Reflection About English Class Essay Sample

The third year of high school has been the most demanding so far, especially since English class has been a much concern. And by that, we mean that it is at this time that we’ve bettered our skills the most and utilized our untapped potential. This is the year wherein we’ve handled constructive criticisms critically and perceived our failures not solely as weaknesses, but as doors for progress as well.

Throughout the course of our English class, there are many aspects that we now apprehend. From individual essays to grammar lessons, reading comprehension to listening tests, video making to debating, we are quite certain that our strengths as readers, writers, listeners, speakers, thinkers, and leaders even, have seemingly enhanced.

The fact that our learning experiences are of various setups makes English class fun. Individual activities train us to be more independent and self-sufficient while group works define what teamwork and fellowship are. Along with these comes a better understanding of the things around us. We now value things as more important than they used to be. This adds to the likableness of the learning atmosphere, which makes it even more comfortable for us to study the subject.

As the year progresses, we found out that we’ve formed a closer bond not just to our companions, but also to the subject itself. There’s just something about it that we can’t find and apply in other subject areas. That may be true, but we’re still amateurs. Still, we get better as time goes by.

Now, let’s center our discussion more on the teacher. Actually, when we were still in the previous year, commentaries about him being too challenging intimidated us, let alone the thought that we were advancing to “the most frustrating year in high school”, as some said. Though those remarks are true at some point, we’ve realized that being his students is more of an opportunity than a problem.

As an instructor, he’s a balance of sentimentality and objectiveness. This is observable since his usual strategy is to let us comprehend inspirational videos, poems, or other works of art. By using these, he lets us maximize the lessons learned rather than the mistakes made by the characters. He then does activities regarding these, and expresses his detailed thoughts about our work as well as advising us about the do’s and don’ts.

He takes his work very professionally — from the way he presents himself to the way he articulates ideas to the way he critiques and influence others. Despite being particular when it comes to giving criticisms and credits, his ideals still include fairness and respect to each individual. Moreover, he welcomes each student’s style of expressing and gives us equal chances of imparting our views. He knows his students well and can convey his teachings in the most modern means. Although he looks like an easy person, he gives his students multiple tasks and challenges every bit of their capabilities. That’s a good thing though. We’re the ones benefiting mostly from it, anyway.

As for other matters, not really all expectations were met. And truth be told, we’re apparently grateful that those expectations weren’t fulfilled. We’re obviously talking about the activities that should be done but weren’t. We really don’t know why we love to be lazy most of the time, but maybe that’s just how high school works.

Soon though, as summer steps in, all these will come to an end. And it may be true that we’ll eventually end up being just a thought some time from now. But we’re not just a mere thought. We’re a story that’s waiting to be told and heard. Our story, be it good or bad, can always serve as an inspiration or a lesson.

Although it may sound a bit sad to know that we’ll just remain as that alone years from now, at least there’s one thing we’re sure of — that story is still alive… It is still our reality… We are still living it… And what better way to make a good story than to make it last?

So then again, it’s still not the end. It’s just another beginning. The only difference is that it’s a step higher — a step higher to grasp wider knowledge and marvel at its wonders.

It’s hard to believe that my amazing journey in English 104 is coming to an end. The journey has been so much more enjoyable than I initially expected. I have tried to avoid taking English 104 numerous times because reading and writing have not been my strong points. Each time I attempted to take this course, I dropped it due to a particular instructor style, or a boring set of literary materials. This time around was different, as I set my goal to obtain my bachelor degree in Business Administration by the end of this summer. Therefore, I was determined to force my way through this class no matter what challenges I had to endure.

To my pleasant surprise, this class was much better than the others. I felt the information and learning come much easier. I enjoyed the class materials and the professor did a very good job responding in earnest to my submissions. Because of the much better experience, I truly believe I have become a better writer and a better critical thinker. Through the discussion board and the professor‘s guidance of our writing assignments, I have improved my analytical skills as well as developed a greater organizational skills.

The discussion board was an important tool in developing my understanding of different aspects of the literature reviewed in this course. This new discussion format allowed me to read other students contributions on the same topic, as well as Professor Duclos-Yourdon’s direct and prompts for a deeper analysis. For example, in week five discussion three, we discussed Sister James‘ character, as I said “Father Flynn offers reasonable explanation about the situation and his involvement with Donald and Sister James’ doubt is appeased. This shows that Sister James is easily persuaded and has no eager to actively seek the truth on her own”(Vickery DB)

Following my thread, Kimberly raised a very interesting question by adding, “who is the real criminal in this play Is it Father Flynn with what reported or is it Sister Aloysius as she manipulates Sister James for her own benefit?”(Voss DB) Through engaging discussion with students on a regular basis, I was able to develop a more detailed understanding of literature work. Additionally, alternative views helped me to incorporate logic and critical thought into my arguments. As a result, I am better equipped to gather necessary information to begin writing my assignments.

Professor Duclos-Yourdon’s guidance was crucial in helping me develop my critical thinking skills. Our first literary analysis essay was the most difficult one for me in this course as I had not written an academic paper in nearly ten years. I decided to write my first paper on “The Yellow Wallpaper” and wanted to submit my rough draft for initial feedback. For fear of not achieving the minimum 1000 word requirement, I began to construct random ideas in my paper, as the professor commented, “Your argument should stay focused on the story. These larger implications can be raised in the conclusion if they come naturally from your argument.”(Dulcos Essay1)

Later, she suggested, “To develop this argument, you could first write a paragraph establishing the wallpaper as a symbol for entrapment (as you have done). Move from there to the narrator’s loss of individuality, and finally explore the narrator’s transformation into this shadow woman.”(Duclos Essay1) These comments resonated with me and gave me great ideas on the direction I wanted to take the paper. I began to interpret the evidence in a deeper way and rethought my thesis statement to be more focused. Moreover, I deleted the unnecessary paragraphs, reorganized my ideas and supported with factual evidence. As a result, the comments I received from Professor Duclos-Yourdon were so insightful it helped not only develop confidence, but also resulted in a perfect grade.

With the additional practice of literary analysis in this course, I conclude that writing is a lot like mathematic. Like mathematics, where there is a specific formula to follow to get a result, so there is also a formula in literary analysis to construct an organized essay. I learn in my previous English class that an essay consists of some very basic elements, for example, an introduction, three body paragraphs, and conclusion. It all sounds really easy, but without following some formula, the result wanders and is difficult to follow.

What helped me in this course was learning to break paragraph down into more detail. For example, the topic sentence should clearly tell the reader what the paragraph will explore. Then, simple lead in sentences should be followed by evidence from the literature work. Finally, I complete the prograph with my own interpretation of the evidence. It’s a pretty straight forward method and I can relate to it more as I love formulas. So every time I got baffled, I think of my paper as this giant math equation to solve. Taking these baby steps has helped me in completing all my assignments without feeling defeated.

Finally, I realize the importance of taking English classes during the first two years of one’s college career because it prepares a person to communicate well in written words as well as spoken. Although I waited till the final year of college to take this course, the analytical, writing, and organizational skills I learned will benefit me for many years to come. I am looking forward to utilizing these newfound skills in my next career opportunity as well as graduate school.
