As someone who has listened to “Watch what you put on Facebook” lectures since the social network was introduced to us in high school, it’s about time the tables have finally turned.

Nadirah Farah Foley, a former admissions officer for the University of Pennsylvania, lost her job after sharing excerpts from applicants’ essays on her personal Facebook page. Not only was she sharing these essays, she was mocking them. The posts were made available through a collection of Facebook screenshots sent anonymously to Dean of Admissions Eric Furda and The Daily Pennsylvanian.

In the Facebook posts, Foley revealed intimate details about several applicants. One student wrote about his fear of going to the bathroom outdoors, which she sarcastically described as “another gem.” Foley also commented, «[S]top the madness» in response to one essay in which an applicant claimed to have a connection with Penn because he was circumcised there. The post attracted 19 Likes and more than a dozen comments at the time of the screenshot.

Many of these posts were also shared anonymously on College Confidential, an online forum about the college admission process that is popular among high school students. Foley also linked to a Tumblr site called “Admissions Problems,” which is a site designed in a similar fashion of popular blog What Should We Call Me as an outlet for daily admissions encounters and complaints.

We get it, sometimes you just need to vent. If it has to be through social media, that’s fine. But as Linda Sharps from The Stir puts it, “There’s a pretty big difference between posting something vague like ‘Having a rough day — can’t wait for happy hour!’ and posting an actual student essay in order to ridicule the topic.”

As of now, Penn’s admissions officers do not have specific guidelines on how or if they can use social media. The university is currently reviewing policy changes that cover the privacy of applicant data and essay information. Colin Gruenwald, the director of college admissions programs for Kaplan’s test preparation division, said the lack of formal guidelines is the current norm among institutions. Kaplan’s surveys of admissions offices show only 15 percent of institutions have mandated social media rules for admissions officers. Contradictory to what many teachers, parents, advisors and employers have warned today’s future college students, among those that have implemented rules, more than two-thirds enforce an outright ban on using social media networks to gather information on applicants.

Facebook has been around for almost nine years now. Social media is the norm today, and the rules of these networks go back to the golden rule, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all.” Hey, you could lose your job.

…That is, I didn’t get into Penn the way students typically do. In March of 2014, I became one of the 1,438 students on the Penn Class of 2018 waitlist. That May, I was fortunate enough to be one of the 90 accepted from that waitlist.

While I sincerely hope you’re able to get into your dream school much earlier than May of your senior year, my experience makes it easier for me to pinpoint how I got into Penn. While I can always guess at which qualities stood out in my application to the schools that accepted me for regular decision, in reality I couldn’t ever tell you for certain that Quality X was the one that put me in the list of acceptances vs the list of rejections.

The waitlist is different. Penn Admissions had already reviewed my application and was unable to give me an offer of admission for regular decision. Accepting my spot on the waitlist was an easy choice — Penn was my dream school, and I could feel how close I was to achieving that dream. After doing some initial research on College Confidential (which did more to stress me out than actually help me), I realized that my ticket from the waitlist to the acceptance list was simple: to stand out in whatever way I could. On paper, I knew it was likely that the other 1,000+ people on the waitlist were more than qualified to be accepted into Penn. But I also knew (from both research online and personal experience) that the waitlist was often regarded as the kiss of death for a student’s admission prospects: an acknowledgment of your accomplishments, but ultimately a rejection.

While these perceptions of the waitlist might have discouraged others from acting, I grabbed my spot and held on tight, determined to prove that I deserved a place in the Class of 2018. I introduced myself via email to my regional representative as soon as I received the waitlist decision. I made multiple calls to the admissions office to ask her questions about the process and to learn more about Penn itself. As I visited some other schools on the east coast, I stopped by Penn and spoke with some of the professors/coaches, scheduled time to sit in on classes, and spoke to a handful of students I knew at Penn to better understand what made this place so special to them. I conveyed all of this to my regional admissions rep via email over the course of March and April.

My last communication with my regional rep included a letter of continued interest, which I still consider to be one of the best letters I’ve ever written. On the day I found out I had been offered a spot on Penn’s waitlist (the same day I received numerous rejections from my other top schools), I had channeled my frustration and disappointment into a letter which outlined 1) How I could contribute to Penn through my skills, previous experiences, and interests, and 2) A list of updates/accomplishments that had occurred after I submitted my application. Somehow, the emotional rollercoaster I experienced that day helped me write in a way that showed how much I truly, genuinely cared about the school and envisioned myself there. A week later, on May 13, 2014, I was shocked and speechless as I read the email welcoming me to the Penn Class of 2018.

I got into Penn by being persistent and tireless in my efforts to demonstrate my commitment to the school. While I was always prepared for the possibility of rejection, I didn’t let that keep me from doing all that I could to convince Penn to offer me a spot. While being admitted to Penn in March would have been a Lot less stressful, the fact that I actually had to research Penn in depth and justify why I was the perfect fit has made me much more appreciative of this unique school. I couldn’t take my acceptance or the school itself for granted when I was on the waitlist, and I’ve continued to have that same attitude to this day. In addition, I’m happy that my experience has given me the opportunity to help high school students navigate the waitlist at Penn and other colleges.

To high school seniors: Waitlist or not, the college admissions process is an extremely humbling experience. Celebrate and cherish your acceptances, and take your rejections as learning opportunities (they are not reflections of your value as a human being!).
