Why can’t i write essays

Why can’t i write essays

I feel anxious about essays so I avoid starting them

By breaking down essay writing into its component parts, you will be able to identify any areas you are unsure about. You could look for information on these areas in the resources section of the Learning Development website. You could also speak to your tutor or Learning Development to ask for specific advice. Again, this will reduce your anxiety about essay writing because rather than thinking ‘I can’t write essays’, you will be able to see the specific areas where you need advice. You are already aware of that you would like to improve the structure of your essays. Allocating sufficient time to planning and reviewing is the easiest way to improve the structure of your essay, so be sure to allow time for this when you set your deadlines. To help you make the most of this allocated time, check your techniques for planning and reviewing.

PRIORITY ACTION 1: improve your time management

Most people, at one time or another, put off things they don’t like doing. Reasons for avoiding starting an essay may include: not being sure about what to include in the essay; being unhappy with the marks from previous essays; finding the process of writing stressful. Whatever the reason for your avoidance, it is important to recognise that avoiding the essay only adds to the anxiety. Make a start on the essay as soon as you get the essay title. This will help to reduce your anxiety by making you feel that you have at least made a start. To help you to make this early start, stop thinking about ‘writing the essay’ as one big task. It is in fact a series of small tasks that culminates in the outcome of an essay. You need to take each stage as a task in itself, and give your attention to it without worrying about the next stage. This will reduce the anxiety you felt from grouping these small tasks under the daunting heading of ‘writing an essay’.

PRIORITY ACTION 2: set deadlines for the completion of each stage in the essay writing process within 24 hours of receiving your essay title

Make your own list of the stages in your own writing process, and set deadlines for the completion of each stage. This will help you to focus on one stage at a time. As explained above, an early start on the essay is important in helping to reduce your anxiety, so within 24 hours of getting your essay title, set deadlines for each stage. Work to each small deadline to encourage yourself to gradually progress through the process of writing the essay.

When you look at the list of stages in writing an essay do any particular stages cause you more anxiety than others? If so, seek advice on those particular areas.

Exactly the same. I’ve had chronic «writer’s block» for months now. I’ve gone from an A-grade essay writer to getting an E in my mocks and not handing essays in for months, to the chagrin of my teachers, even after being moaned at about it several times. I can’t bring myself to type anything, and when I do, it’s bloody awful.

I’m hoping for a mini miracle in my exams.

I have an actual nightmare with essays, I really know how you feel. It takes me forever to even type a sentence, let alone the whole thing. I mean, now I’m in uni, there aren’t so many essays, but lab reports and tutorial essays (which I still haven’t written, these were due in before christmas. ) I haven’t actually written an essay since early AS level so I’ve kind of lost whatever ability I had.

I’m doing Physics so there aren’t so many essays, but I just dread lab reports. Also hoping for a massive lab report instead of a dissertation in my third year.

I struggle much more when typing out essays than when I am hand writing them.

I always find the first paragraph the hardest to write but after that I’m fine. That said some of the introductions to my History essays have been abysmal.

Practice, practice, practice.

I was much the same but I ended up getting firsts on my politics essays at undergrad (all my final year essays were in the 70+ range). Write and then write some more. Also, probably more important than that, read. The more read, the better you will become at writing ‘cos you’re emulating elements of the writers you like (even unwittingly) — not poets ofc but prose writers. Newspapers, non-fiction books (unless you want to study English or smth), journal articles (Very important if you aim for subjects like sociology, philosophy, politics, etc ‘cos you get an idea of how people in the field write — again, emulation is your friend, you don’t need to write imaginatively in those fields).

Read other people, emulate what you like about their writings, and keep practising essay writing. I guarantee you will become far better @ it in no time.
